Transposable elements: Barbara McClintock and early experiments in maize In 1938 Marcus Rhodes provided the first genetic description of an unstable mutation, an allele of a gene required for the production of pigment in maize

چکیده
In 1938 Marcus Rhodes provided the first genetic description of an unstable mutation, an allele of a gene required for the production of pigment in maize. This instability resulted in a variegated phenotype. Variegation describes irregular patterns of pigmentation and reflects changes in the expression of genes that control pigment production. Rhodes defined two genes required for this instability: the unstable allele defined one gene, and a dominant mutation called Dotted that controlled this instability mapped to a separate locus, defining a second gene. In the 1940s and 1950s Barbara McClintock showed that this type of instability was caused by genetic elements that moved or transposed from one locus to another. It was not until the description of transposable elements in bacteria two decades later that McClintock's work was truly appreciated. McClintock won the Nobel Prize for her work on transposable elements in 1983.

متن کاملStudy of the Effect of 5-Azacytidine as a DNA Demethylating Agent on Agronomic Traits, Androgenesis Induction via Anther Culture and DNA-Methyltransferase Gene Expression in Maize (Zea mays L.) Leaf Tissue
Optimization of in vitro methods for the production of maize double haploids plays an important role in the breeding programs of this plant. In this study, the effects of 5-azacytidine on agronomic traits, androgenesis induction efficiency and also, DNA methyltransferase gene expression (AF229183.1) in two growth stages of maize were investigated. This experiment was performed as factorial base...
متن کامل"The Origin and Behavior of Mutable Loci in Maize" (1950), by Barbara McClintock
"The Origin and Behavior of Mutable Loci in Maize," by Barbara McClintock, was published in 1950 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences [2] of the United States of America. McClintock worked at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory [3] in Laurel Hollow, New York, at the time of the publication, and in the article she describes her discovery of transposable elements in the genome [4]...
متن کاملGenetic analysis of Biochemical and Physiological Traits using Haymen’s Graphical Approach in Lines and F2 Progenies of Maize (Zea mays L.)
The diallel mating design is an important tool used by plant breeding programs to obtain information on trait inheritance. Knowledge of gene action, heritability and genetic advance from selection is a prerequisite for starting a breeding program for developing varieties of maize. Five maize S7 lines and their F2 progenies were studied in a 5 × 5 half-diallel crossing design to evaluate the gen...
متن کاملBarbara McClintock on Defining the Unstable Genome.
It is with this prescient statement that Barbara McClintock began the discussion of her classic 1953 GENETICS article describing how so-called “extragenic” components, now known as transposons, could alter the function of nearby genes. Precisely 30 years later she would be the sole winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her scrupulous studies of unexpected phenotypic changes sh...
